Further Development of EtherCAT-P by Conec

CONEC Elektronische Bauelemente GmbH

EtherCAT is an Ethernet-based communication technology known for its high transmission speed, used in automation technology for real-time synchronization. EtherCAT-P extends this technology by integrating a 24V power supply. This combination allows both data and power to be transmitted over a two-wire cable pair, leading to a compact and cost-effective device connection.

On a second cable pair, data and the peripheral voltage (Up) for actuators are also transmitted. This results in an efficient and space-saving wiring solution. EtherCAT-P provides a significant extension for industrial real-time Ethernet systems (Industrial Ethernet) and presents an attractive alternative to other technologies like Power over Data Lines (PoDL) or Hybrid Single Pair Ethernet (SPE).

Although EtherCAT has not yet achieved the highest market share in industrial communication, it has shown remarkable growth rates in recent years. EtherCAT-P is likely to support this trend. Furthermore, market relevance is expected to increase as EtherCAT-P interfaces are implemented in automation modules by well-known manufacturers.

With simplified wiring compared to Industrial Ethernet and higher data throughput rates compared to traditional fieldbus systems, EtherCAT-P forms a technological bridge on the path to SPE, which is expected to take some time to materialize in practical applications.
